Multi Faith Forum Takes Shape
Over 15 leaders from various faith groups working in Thurrock met to consider the merits of formalising a multi-faith forum. Many positive reasons for a faith forum were put forward by faith leaders. All faiths share some common ground - proposed by one attendee as a social conscience of all religions working together for humanity - and it was generally felt that the collective voice of faith groups as a sector held many benefits including:
> A support network for individual faith groups in times of need
> Signposting for people needing a faith service at times of need
> Sign posting to services offered to the wider community
> Engagement in the policies that shape Thurrock's future at a strategic and service based level
> A voice within equalities and diversity frameworks to help better represent the needs of different faith communities.
The attendees recognised that some tensions and difficulties were bound to emerge with taking a multi faith forum forward, but that in general, support for the forum was forthcoming.
It was good to see the level of support from the Christian faith leaders and we would encourage others to ‘get on board’ with this initiative as future meetings take place. The object in mind is not that this reduces to a ‘talking shop’ but that positive actions can result for the benefit of the communities we serve and for the kingdom we are a part of. The next meeting date will be publicised on the ‘Transformation Thurrock’ website.
