Week of Prayer for Christian Unity - opportunity knocks!

peterpaulThis week’s Grays Leaders Prayer on Thursday morning gathered in the new 'Oak Room' in the Grays Parish Church building, St Peter’s and St Paul’s.

Present on this occasion were Grays Team Ministry Rector Rev Darren Barlow; Rev Christine Williams of St Mary's, Little Thurrock; Rev Rosemary Pritchard of Grays Methodist Church; and Transformation Thurrock's Tim Harrold. (A low turn out, you may think, but quite often around 12 local ministers attend.)

After worshipping and praying for an hour, we got to discussing the forthcoming Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in the New Year.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an annual international event which we in Thurrock have observed over the past 6 years or so. It always falls between the feast days of St Peter (18 January) and St Paul (25 January).

In 2003, churches across the borough held a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 24-7, seven venues taking a day each. It was dubbed a 'Pilgrimage of Prayer'. This year we held a 24-7 prayer week at Grays Baptist Church which was supported by intercessors from around Thurrock.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an opportunity to intercede for a more effective and visible unified church body, the Family of God and Bride of Christ, in the wider community of Thurrock.

So, what are we doing together for 2010's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity?

We are thinking of having a joint prayer and worship gathering at Grays Parish Church - the appropriately named St Peter's and St Paul's - on the evening of Sunday 17 January.

Throughout the week, there can be daily times of prayer at other venues throughout the borough. Exisiting gatherings can be utilised for this, or special events can be put on.

For example, the Transformation Thurrock Prayer meeting at Grays Methodist Church on Saturday 23 January, will be part of this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The week will culminate the following day.

If you would like your church, group or event to be a part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, then please contact Tim Harrold as soon as possible so this can be organised before Christmas.
