Thurrock’s GDOP M25 Nutcracker 24-10 Review

Aveley was once home to Amazing Grace composer Robert Newton. Now, some 200 years later, it’s been home to Thurrock’s M25 Nutcracker Prayer Room.

One of 10 prayer rooms around London’s orbital motorway, Aveley Christian Centre hosted the Nutcracker from Wednesday 20 May, finishing at 6pm on Saturday 30 May. Aveley is just over the M25 which made it all the more appropriate as the venue.

The aim of the Nutcracker was to ‘crack’ with prayer the ‘nut’ of London. The initiative was realised in partnership with Global Day of Prayer London.

Aveley1The prayer room was set up in the back office of the church with maps of Thurrock, the M25 region, London’s boroughs and the Thames Gateway, along with sections on Parliament, the Royal Family and church unity. There was also a meditative corner based on Psalm 139 and Freedom In Christ materials.

It has to be said that turn out from Thurrock’s churches was poor and potentially disappointing, and it was with regret and a bit of frustration that the decision had to be made to close the prayer room overnight. Only one church block booked a 24 hour period, including the night watches.

However, Pastors Alan & Lydia Field said that hosting the Nutcracker had been a great blessing to the Christian Centre, and a number of their congregation testified to great times with the Lord during the 10 days. Because the church had to be manned from 6am to 12 midnight each day, a lot of conversations took place as people from various other churches came along in their dribs and drabs.

Will we do it again? We shall see what Jesus says… It’s his project, after all.
