Profile of a King - Advent reflections available
Remember when we were kids, eagerly watching Blue Peter in the run up to Christmas, to see Leslie Judd or John Noakes and Shep lighting the candles on the Advent Crown? The candles clung precariously to a couple of tinsel-covered wire coat hangers made in the studio a couple of weeks before by Val Singleton and Petra. Every house had one of these contraptions, usually placed in the hall, usually swinging madly and dangerously in the wind when your Dad came in from work.
Well, now, to help us through Advent, FEBA, the 40-year-old gospel radio station, has produced in conjunction with the Evangelical Alliance, a 26-day series of reflections called Profile of a King. The short but succinct daily nuggets suggest a Bible passage to read; a relevant meditation; and some prayer direction. The themes cover the story of Christmas and the personalities involved, sometimes from unexpected, refreshing and thought-provoking perspectives, bringing things right into our contemporary world.
The reflections have been written by Andy Freeman (below left), who is a good friend of Thurrock's, having worked in the borough in his younger years and who now regularly visits the Stanford & Corringham Boiler Room Community as part of the Transit team's training. Andy has also written a book about 'new monasticism' - Punk Monk (right).
Andy helped to plant the first Boiler Room in Reading, which two car loads of Thurrockites visited in early 2002 and which provided the creative inspiration for many 24-7 prayer weeks that followed across the churches of the borough. But Andy is soon to be swapping 'abbothood' for 'vicarhood' as he is begins to train for ordination in the Anglican church.
