Thurrock Turns Blue: General and Council Elections Results

uk-flagAfter a night of political drama and tension across the nation, the votes have been (mostly) counted, and as predicted, we have the first hung parliament since 1974.

Thurrock's two parliamentary constituency and council elections' results followed the general trend against Labour and towards the Conservatives. All the results are below.

As I write this, Messrs Brown, Cameron and Clegg are beginning to work out the way forward in establishing a credible government. May God guide them, overrule them, bless them, and the nation as these negotiations take shape. And of course, God bless the Queen with wise counsel at this time. May we walk into our prophetic destiny and not away from it.

The parliamentary results for the east of the borough came comparatively early on in the night, and were very clear cut. The Tories' Stephen Metcalfe - who came to the Thurrock Day of Prayer last October - won by a good majority.

This means the borough must bid Angela Smith farewell - we thank God for her, serving the east of the borough with diligence and integrity during her time as MP. Angela was of course also a close aide to the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Transformation Thurrock wishes her all the best for the future.

However, things were not so hunky dory at the Civic Hall where the Thurrock count was taking place. There had to be two recounts, and there were complaints about the system and organisation. Jackie Doyle-Price of the Conservatives eventually came out on top, but by the slimmest of margins, leaving Labour's Carl Morris unable to follow in outgoing MP Andrew Mackinlay's footsteps.

Transformation Thurrock would like to thank God for Andrew, for his many years of service to the borough and his identification and close relationship to the body of believers right across the denominational divides, always asking for our prayers. His integrity was borne out by his decision to remain on the backbenches from where he felt he could be a more effective opposition to the government and keep Thurrock as his focus. We wish him and Ruth a very happy and well-deserved retirement.

We can give thanks to God that the local results show that a majority of people voted for mainstream and not extreme parties. We would urge them as they talk of returning the UK to being a 'Christian nation' that they look to Jesus - who is alive, now - and his message of love, grace, mercy and redemption for all of the human race.

Results shown in order of candidate name; political party; votes received; and % of vote.

KEEP PRAYING FOR THURROCK AND THE NATION!

May our new MPs and national government remember mercy, act in justice, be good news to the poor, and be builders of community.

Some scriptures to help with our prayers at this time of uncertainty.

Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.
Proverbs 14:34

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour... 1 Timothy 2:1-3

Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. Joel 3:14

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. Isaiah 58:12

But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! Amos 5:23

... if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

God bless you in the Name of the Most High, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the Prime Minister of prime ministers, the Mayor of mayors, the Counsellor of councillors, Jesus Christ.
