2010 Schools' Prayer Day takes shape

The Thurrock & Havering Schools' Prayer Day takes place at Aveley Methodist Church on Saturday 2 October.

The event is being facilitated by children's and schools' worker and puppeteer Suzanne Pearson of Hornchurch Methodist Church; Wendy Jackson - who runs a prayer meeting at St Edward's School in Romford - of St Andrew's, Hornchurch; and Transformation Thurrock's own Tim Harrold.

P4S logo 2This year they are getting help from Thurrock's Carla Taylor, who is doing Prayer Spaces for Schools with 24-7 Prayer. She is putting together a prayer space for the day in order to illustrate the kind of work she is developing in primary schools in the Stanford & Corringham area. because of their involvement, 24-7's UK Base Leader Phil Togwell is supporting the School's Prayer Day.

Also helping are Richard Shaw and Ben Poch who both work for Scripture Union. Richard has had many years experience working in the Havering area and is a key figure behind the annual Solid youth and chidren's weekend at Stubbers Farm in Upminster. He is now the SE England rep for SU. Ben has recently taken over Richard's boroughwide work.

The team are also pleased to have Richard Powney of Viz-a-Viz in Basildon bring an encouragement to pray for our schools and the amazing breadth of Christian involvement across the two boroughs.

Aveley Methodist Church has been chosen as the venue for the second year running because, although it's situated right on the edges of Thurrock's border with Havering, it's actually central to both boroughs. The minister there, Brian Endecott, is part of the Methodist circuit that extends into Havering rather than Thurrock, and he also pastors at Rainham Methodists. So, it's the perfectly positioned location!

A number of schools-related agencies have been invited to bring along exhibition stands to show the kind of work they are involved in. When the full list of contributors is known, it will be published on this website.

The event's provisional programme looks like this:
  • 12.30pm - event opens
  • 12.30-  coffee and looking at the displays and Prayer Space
  • 1.30 - worship (hopefully with youth band from Brentwood)
  • 2pm - intoduction
  • 2.10pm - Richard Powney, Viz-a-Viz
  • 2.30pm - prayer for adults working in schools (overseen by Tim Harrold)
  • 3.15pm - Prayer Space
  • 4pm - worship

  • 4.55pm - worship and close
  • 5pm - coffee and looking at the displays and Prayer Space
  • 6pm - close
Events such as these take place up and down the country, inspired and encouraged by Pray For Schools (formerly the Schools Prayer Network). This is an offshoot of the work of Care. In 2009, Thurrock and Havering were asked to put on a joint prayer gathering for schools across the area. This union between the boroughs has a prophetic feel about it, both being on the north side at the Thames Gateway - literally inside and outside the boundary of Greater London, yet both part of Essex. Now that the bridge has been bult along with the 'engagement ring' gateway over the Mardyke at Purfleet and Rainham Marshes, this link has somehow been cemented.

Please put this date in your diary - please come along!
