St Cedd's hosting Rock Thurrock Prayer on Friday
Well, not St Cedd himself. He went to join the 'great cloud of witnesses' in 664AD, just a decade after bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Essex, Thurrock and Kent shores.
But the church that's named after him in Stifford Clays, the north part of Grays. The church building (right), just over 50 years old, stands in the middle of what was then a new and exploding estate in the years of expansion after the Second World War when so many Eastenders found themselves resettling in southwest Essex. Naturally, St Cedd's had a bit of a mission feel about it - and it still does.
And not for the first time, St Cedd's is hosting a Rock Thurrock prayer event. Rev Andy Higgs and his congregation there have been firmly behind the Rock Thurock project. "It's a sign of the Kingdom," says Andy, who also takes care of the picture postcard St Mary's Parish Church in North Stifford, where his rectory is situated.
The gathering on Friday begins at 7.30pm. Let's let some prayer fireworks off as we light the fuses with the tapers of our prayers and stand back to watch our prayer take off.
Last week's Rock Thurrock Prayer at Corringham Baptist Church
Last week's focuses for prayer were harmony and the future. Pastor Bob Sullivan (below, right) emphasised the need for harmony and expressed the regrettable observation that "the wave of unity that greeted Rock Thurrock before the summer has all but flattened out".
Well, we prayed that that isn't the case, and that harmony would be played out among the churches of Thurrock like an orchestra, with its different sections (brass, woodwind, strings and percussion), and within those sections, subsections, all conducted by the One Conductor, Jesus.
We also prayed for the immediate and far-off future, for the need to "fish where the youth are swimming", and for next autumn's GSUS LIVE project.
