Thurrock's Gold Champions gather this Thursday

MORE THAN GOLD
THURROCK GOLD CHAMPIONS
MEETING

7.30pm
THURSDAY 8 DECEMBER
@
SOCKETTS HEATH BAPTIST CHURCH
Premier Avenue, Grays RM16 2SB

The following email has gone out from Transformation Thurrock to the ten or so More Than Gold Gold Champions (i.e. church reps) in local churches. This invitation is extended to any others who are interested in being Gold Champions, or whom church leaders may feel would make good Gold Champions, championing the opportunity London 2012 presents to the church both locally and across the nation to reach and prayer over our communities.

Whatever you feel about the Olympic & Paralympic Games, it is our responsibility to respond - for such a time as this.

MoreThanGoldDear Gold Champions

The purpose of this initial gathering is to talk together about the way ahead for the church of Thurrock's response to the Olympic & Paralympic Games, and to pray.

There is no agenda as such, but among things to talk about are:
  • The Olympic Torch comes to Thurrock, Friday 6 July
  • What is already being planned?
  • Tim Harrold & Rob Groves' meeting with Cllr Shane Hebb re Thurrock Council's response to Olympics and the Torch + other Council contacts and the way ahead
  • How the church can serve the council
  • Joint church thinking: intentional unity and God's promise to bless (Ps.133, Jn. 17:20)
  • Festivals and street parties (Rob to train us?)
  • Resources available (official MTG DVD, some of which Tim has, + other stuff)
Some thoughts from Ashley Lovett (minister at Socketts Heath Baptist Church)...

The advantages of a co-ordinated response include:
  • sharing ideas and resources, including training
  • avoiding duplication and simplifying communication with other bodies, such as the council
  • being able to tackle more ambitious projects
  • being able to promote what others are doing
See www.morethangold.org.uk for resources and www.london2012.com for information (also www.bbc.co.uk/2012)

Transformation Thurrock has been anticipating the impact of London 2012 for some time as borne out by these articles from the website - see the links to the left of this page.
Tim Harrold has been Thurrock's 'Borough Champion' since More Than Gold's launch at Leyton Orient FC in November last year, and has shown the MTG DVD at the Grays Leaders' Breakfast and on other occasions (e.g. using it as part of a talk at Grays Baptist Church two Sundays ago). He sits on the London Borough Champions Network committee, as well as having input into MTG's national prayer strategy.

His role locally is to encourage those who have become Gold Champions to themselves encourage their churches to get involved in London 2012 locally, and to develop a boroughwide and where possible trans-denominational strategy; to encourage others to become Gold Champions; to create links between church, community and the Council regarding London 2012; and to be a link between the borough and MTG.

    Important Dates!
    • Torch in Thurrock with evening celebration in Grays: Friday 6 July
    • Olympics: 27 July - 12 August 2012
    • Paralympics: 29 August - 9 September 2012
Please use the More Than Gold logo as you 'olympify' stuff at your church. Using it is free and without copyright (unlike the Olympic rings and London 2012 logos - DO NOT use them!).

Please encourage other interested parties to come. This email will also go to local churches with an encouragement to send representatives.

If you signed up to be a Gold Champion so you could get the emails, then please delegate someone in your church to take on the role. Thank you.
