| Transformation Thurrock |
Transformation Thurrock – from filthy water to fresh waterAccording to the Oxford Dictionary of Name Places, the word Thurrock derives from the Anglo-Saxon turroc, which means ‘a place where filthy water collects’. This is on account of the bend in the Thames upon which the land sits which causes silt to collect and then become marshland, reminding Thurrock’s early dwellers of the bilge of a ship where all the dirt tends to collect. Some translations of turroc imply a pile of dung in a field! In 1988, I was walking down by Grays Beach and saw someone stuck in the mud at low tide. The more she struggled, the more stuck she became – she was unable to save herself. The emergency services were called and she was eventually rescued. This is a bit like many in Thurrock: stuck in the mud of life, and only outside help will do – if called. Transformation Thurrock is all about providing the means to flush the filthy water of life away through the pouring out of pure, clean, fresh water. We believe the external salvation each man, woman, boy and girl needs comes from Jesus Christ and the work of the Spirit of God. This is what motivates the Christian Faith Community in Thurrock into actions that provoke and encourage change for not just something that is better, but is the very best. Transformation Thurrock is a means by which people all over the borough can share resources, work together on projects, express their faith through united prayer and united mission, and freely use a banner that ‘does what it says on the tin’ – transforms our borough. |
