The EU Referendum - how should we pray?
from Andy Acreman at Thurrock Christian Fellowship
EU REFERENDUM - Thursday 23 June 2016
The EU Referendum is about a lot of things: Economic advantage, legal powers, regulations, control of borders, freedom of movement, defence, and national sovereignty.
The 'Remain' and the 'Leave' campaigns both put their cases passionately and persuasively. But above and beyond all this lies heavenly sovereignty. The Lord is sovereign! Heaven rules!
Daniel 2:20-21 NIV
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning."
And yet he desires to blend his sovereignty with our prayers...
1 Timothy 2:1-4 NIV
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Therefore we have an opportunity in this nation, not only to vote, but to pray.
In fact, it is an obligation!
The EU Referendum is probably of significantly greater and more lasting importance than any single general election. We have been in the EU for just over 40 years. At the time of writing this, we have just over 40 days before we will together decide this nation's destiny.
I propose that, as members of Thurrock's church, we commit ourselves to pray daily for God to guide us and all the voters, so that the outcome is the best one for Christ's Kingdom, the best for the UK, and the best for the EU. This is a once-in-a-generation referendum, and one that we have to rely on God to get right for us.
Let this be a challenge to each one of us to take part! Perhaps, also, on the night before the referendum we can gather again to pray together?
>>> ‘Prayer for Our Nation and the Referendum’ on Wednesday 22 June, 9am-1pm and 6-9pm in St Mary’s, Dock Road, Little Thurrock.
Open to everyone. Rev Christine Williams would like to remind people that this is not party political or Brexit or ‘Better together’. We are simply opening ourselves up to pray for God’s will to be done in our nation.

>>> Smith Wigglesworth prophesied in 1947 that God will use the church in the UK to greatly influence mainland Europe, bringing many to Christ. Would being in or out of the EU be a help or a hindrance to this? Or will it happen anyway? What is God saying? Read it here:
"During the next few decades there will be two distinct moves of the Holy Spirit across the church in Great Britain. The first move will affect every church that is open to receive it, and will be characterised by a restoration of the baptism and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The second move of the Holy Spirit will result in people leaving historic churches and planting new churches.
In the duration of each of these moves, the people who are involved will say, 'This is a great revival.' But the Lord says, 'No, neither is this the great revival but both are steps towards it.'
When the new church phase is on the wane, there will be evidence in the churches of something that has not been seen before: a coming together of those with an emphasis on the word and those with an emphasis on the Spirit. When the word and the Spirit come together, there will be the biggest move of the Holy Spirit that the nation, and indeed, the world has ever seen. It will mark the beginning of a revival that will eclipse anything that has been witnessed within these shores, even the Wesleyan and Welsh revivals of former years. The outpouring of God’s Spirit will flow over from the United Kingdom to mainland Europe, and from there, will begin a missionary move to the ends of the earth."
