barnbusquizLast Saturday night’s Quiz Night at St Clement’s in West Thurrock saw some 120 contestants raise around £840 for Thurrock’s Bar’n’Bus Project – an answer to prayer after an initial slow uptake for the evening.

Quiz Master Simon Wilson took 14 teams through 10 rounds of mind-stretching trivia.
The winning team were the “Also Rans”, made up largely of folk from Grays Baptist Church. Two members of the team had travelled 120 miles just to be in the quiz! They beat West Thurrock Chapel’s “Optimists” by one point – and it all came down to who knew which is the only mammal to be able to kneel on all four legs!

The Bar’N’Bus Trust’s Operations Manager, Stuart Christian, reminded everyone that Bar’N’Bus creates a unique opportunity to speak into young people’s lives. “I was in the park with my own kids one day when a lad came up to me who I hadn’t seen for about 10 years and thanked me for the bus. He said that if it hadn’t been for the bus he’d have been just roaming the streets and getting into all sorts of trouble.”

Stuart went onto to explain how the simple message of Jesus given by the Bar’N’Bus teams could prevent someone from taking drugs, binge drinking, or getting involved in promiscuity.

The Thurrock Bar’N’Bus Project would like to thank Rev Michelle Reynolds and the congregation of St Clement’s Church for their kind and generous hospitality; Ray Barnard for his tireless behind-the-scenes logistics; Quiz Master Simon Wilson; scorer Jenny Wilson; Suzy Wade, fundraiser for Bar’N’Bus, and Justin her husband for their organisation and support. Most of all we’d like to thank all of you who came out to support Bar’N’Bus and help raise a sizable amount of money.

One lady remarked afterwards, “This has been the best quiz night I’ve ever been to!” All the more reason to hold another one next year!

… However, if you can’t wait for that, why not go along to the South Woodham Ferrers Bar’N’Bus Fundraising Quiz Night in October? More details on www.barnbus.org.uk.

And don’t forget the Annual Bar’N’Bus Curry Night on Tuesday 10 February at the Tandoori Parlour in Thundersley (to be confirmed).
