from Ashley Lovett, pastor at Socketts Heath Baptist Church
For the third year in succession, a number of churches in North Grays have joined together to run a Holiday Club for local primary school children.
This year’s theme was ‘Heroes vs Villains (from the Bible)’ and the children (and many of the adult helpers) were introduced to some of the characters they’re unlikely to come across in Sunday School or School Assemblies! Think of the ‘Horrible Histories’ series of books and television programmes and you’ll get the idea.
Each morning was a mix of high-energy songs, creative crafts, frenetic games and much more. And together we learned that God chooses surprising heroes, who only need faith as small as a mustard seed to accomplish great things, as long as they love the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind and strength.
As always, it was over too quickly, but there’s something satisfying about sending the children (and the adults) home wanting more.
Thanks go to Grays URC in Bradleigh Avenue for hosting once again, and to all the fabulous volunteers from there, as well as from St John’s (Victoria Avenue), Grays Methodist and Socketts Heath Baptist Church. This was a joint effort and it was a real blessing to all of us to be able to share together in this part of God’s mission.
Many of us are already looking forward to next year…
